Officials investigate death of NIU student who fell from dorm's 11th floor

Sept. 29--Officials are investigating the death of a Northern Illinois University student who reportedly was killed in a fall from a dormitory window Saturday night, according to authorities.

Eric Weldy, NIU's vice president for student affairs and enrollment management, posted a notice Sunday evening, saying the student removed a window screen and "fell from the 11th floor at the Stevenson Towers residence hall."

The student "was transported from the scene to Kishwaukee Hospital but passed away from injuries a short time later," Weldy's statement said.

The coroner's office said it was called at 10:25 p.m. Saturday. A spokesman said the student is a male, but further information about his identity or the incident was unavailable Monday.

Calls to Weldy's office and the NIU Police Department weren't immediately returned.

Stevenson Towers is on the western edge of the campus and consists of four 12-story towers, according to NIU's website.

"(T)he university's counseling and consultation services staff has been meeting with students and staff throughout the day, and the staff is available to any other members of the university family who may be in need of their services," Weldy said in the statement.

Sullivan and Gaines are freelance reporters.
