Officials: 1 dead in Rosemont shooting

Jan. 08--A man was shot and killed in Rosemont on Wednesday, and a village spokesman said an off-duty Rosemont police officer is believed to be the gunman.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the victim as Joseph Caffarello, 31, of the 9800 block of Norwood Avenue in Rosemont.

Little information has been released about the shooting, which occurred in a gated community near Lange Park. Village officials said the case has been turned over to Illinois State Police because the shooting apparently involved a Rosemont officer, who has not been identified.

State police spokeswoman Monique Bond confirmed the agency is investigating.

Village spokesman Gary Mack said the shooting occurred outside a home along Scott Street.

The village said in a statement that the unnamed officer believed to be involved is a four-year veteran of the local public safety department and that the shooting "appears to be domestic related." The officer has been placed on leave pending the investigation.

The statement said Caffarello was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead.

Local schools were placed on soft lockdown earlier Wednesday, but that has been lifted, officials said.

The neighborhood is cordoned off with yellow crime tape, and multiple police squad cars were seen parked on Scott Street.
