An official review of Anthony Rizzo's controversial slide Monday indicated that interference should have been called.
A baseball source confirmed the decision, which was relayed to the Cubs and Pirates, who were angered after a replay review confirmed the on-field decision that led to two runs in the eighth inning of the Cubs' 7-0 win over the Pirates.
On the play, Rizzo slid hard to the left side of home plate in an attempt to break up a double play. But Rizzo's leg clipped the right angle of Pirates catcher Elias Diaz, whose throw to first base sailed into right field and allowed two runs to score.
The Pirates contended that Rizzo should have been guilty of interference, which would have wiped out the runs. Instead, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle was ejected after arguing following the replay.
The decision Monday cannot be reversed.
