Official Met Office verdict on whether snow will hit the UK

The Met Office has given its response to reports that the country could see widespread snow overnight for Thursday morning - and revealed 'don’t be surprised if you wake up to some early morning snowfall'. A 'straight from the arctic' cold front is set to move in from the north on Wednesday, bringing in a big chill.

And forecaster Aidan McGiven revealed that even people in London and the South East could be waking up to snowfall as temperatures plunge. The whole country is covered on the map area where potential snow could fall during the latest 10-day look ahead report which you can watch above.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: “Now that we’ve got used to some warm spring sunshine this week winder bites back. “Coming done from north of the UK air straight from the arctic behind this cold front."

"In some places we will see sleet and snow - even in the south." On the weather front coming down the UK from the North on Wednesday night, Aidan said: “During Wednesday night into the start of Thursday it starts to develop a little circulation and there’s some uncertainty into how much the feature will develop and as a result the extent the timing and the result of any precipitation.

“But it could bring in places sleet and snow if it’s intense enough. By the time we start Thursday it’s towards the south east where things could be particularly interesting.

“As I mentioned there’s a lot of uncertainty but there’s the potential for rain, sleet and snow - a mixture perhaps and the snow mostly over high ground, the Chilterns, the Cotswolds and so on but perhaps not exclusively. So don’t be surprised if you wake up to some early morning snowfall in the South East on Thursday.

“Any snow accumulating on roads, grass verges and so on and it won’t last long.”
