Official Game of Thrones documentary: Nottingham filmmaker Jeanie Finlay given 'unprecedented' access behind the scenes of HBO series

Nottingham filmmaker Jeanie Finlay was given "unprecedented" access behind the scenes of Game of Thrones to make the show's official end-of-series documentary.

A former director of the city's flagship cinema and media centre Broadway, Jeanie secretly edited the two-hour TV special on the Broad Street premises over the course of seven months.

The final product Game of Thrones : The Last Watch will air the week following the currently untitled final episode of the hit fantasy series, home network HBO revealed.

The documentary will air in the US on May 26, with a UK date still to be announced for Sky Atlantic and Now TV.

Taking to Twitter to thank fans for their warm reception to the news, Jeanie confessed to feeling "totes emosh" and "beyond excited".

HBO described the documentary as having "unprecedented access".

Nottingham filmmaker Jeanie Finlay (Jo Irvine)

"The Last Watch is an up-close and personal report from the trenches of production, following the crew and the cast as they contend with extreme weather, punishing deadlines and an ever-excited fandom hungry for spoilers.

"Much more than a 'making of' documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world – and then have to say goodbye to it."

The special sees Jeanie, whose previous documentaries include the acclaimed Orion: The Man Who Would Be King, Seahorse, Sound It Out, The Great Hip Hop Hoax and Panto!, go behind the scenes with the cast and crew as they film the final scenes of the dramatic series.

The cast, including West Bridgford's Joe Dempsie as Gendry, will also be reuniting for a special reunion for the box set of season 8, to be released later this year.

The final season of the series will see Westeros contend with the attack by the Night King and the Army of the Dead, before revealing who finally ends up on the Iron Throne.

Game of Thrones season 8 airs in the UK on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on April 15.
