Revenue officers seized 9 million cigarettes worth a staggering €4.4 million at Dublin Port in a significant sting on Ireland's shadow economy.

During an intelligence led operation, the officers made the discovery of the smuggled cigarettes in a refrigerated shipping container today.

The illegal haul was declared as 'frozen food' that arrived aboard a vessel from Rotterdam.

The ‘illicit white’ cigarettes, branded ‘FEST represented a potential loss to the exchequer of €3.77 million.

A spokesman for Revenue said investigations are ongoing and urged people to report any additional information they may have regarding the seizure.

He said: "This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295."
