A police officer is in hospital with serious head injuries after being struck by a car during a pursuit in southern NSW.

Police say that at about 8.20pm on Monday officers were pursuing a confirmed stolen utility on the Monaro Highway at Nimmitabel about 10km outside of Cooma.

"The ute stopped, and the driver got out of the car and started to run. The police officers also stopped, and the male officer got out of the car and commenced a foot pursuit," police said in a statement.

"The man was seen getting into a small white sedan and that car has then collided with the policeman."

The constable suffered serious head injuries and was treated at the scene before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.

No arrests had been made late on Monday.
