Officer sacked after boasting of using force on young female detainee

A police officer based at Charing Cross station has been sacked for breaching the standards of professional behaviour relating to discreditable conduct, authority, respect and courtesy, and equality and diversity (James Manning/PA) - (PA Archive)

A Charing Cross police station officer has been sacked after he boasted about using force on a young female detainee, the force has said.

Pc Charlie Cano was dismissed without notice after a misconduct panel found he was at the station involved in “inappropriate and discriminatory conversations” about female members of the public.

His behaviour was unearthed after the BBC Panorama documentary on the station aired in October, the Metropolitan Police said.

Footage showed Pc Cano, of Central West Command Unit, making the comments.

Further unaired content was later provided to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is still probing the behaviour of multiple officers from Charing Cross.

Commander Simon Messinger, from the Met’s professionalism department, said: “We moved swiftly to act upon the additional footage shared by the BBC to identify PC Cano, immediately suspend him from duty, and hold him to account for his appalling behaviour.

“Eight serving officers have been dismissed for their unacceptable conduct at Charing Cross and we continue to support the ongoing IOPC investigation.

“The robust action we are taking is part of our tireless work to raise standards and improve the culture across our organisation.”

The panel found Pc Cano breached the standards of professional behaviour relating to discreditable conduct, authority, respect and courtesy, and equality and diversity.
