Four officers killed in knife attack at police headquarters in Paris

Four police officers have been killed outside the central police headquarters in Paris following a knife attack, according to French media.

The French police union's official confirmed the first death earlier on Thursday and three further deaths have been reported. The attack happened at the Prefecture de Police Paris, close to Notre-Dame.

The attack happened in the courtyard of the police building, the BBC reports.

French media are reporting that the attacker was a member of staff and has been shot dead by officers, CNN News reported.

There is no indication of a motivation as yet.

Police union official Loic Travers told France's BFM TV earlier: "As we speak, one colleague is dead following a knife attack.

"Another colleague is in a state of shock... and the person behind the attack has been shot by another colleague."

No further details of the death have been released.

French Interior Minister, Christophe Castaner, is on his way to the scene of the attack.

The area around the Police HQ has been cordoned off.

It comes just  a day after French people went on strike across the country over increasing violence towards officers and rising suicide rates within the force.
