Officer hit by car on London Road named by Police Scotland as Phil Hedge-Holmes remains in serious condition

A 45-year-old police officer has sustained serious leg injuries after being struck by a car in Glasgow’s east end.

The incident happened around 10.50am this morning (Friday, May 31), when Phil Hedge-Holmes was hit by a silver Vauxhall Corsa in London Road, Carmyle .

The serving office, who has been with the police for almost five years, was attending the scene of an earlier collision at the time.

Superintendent Sandy Blair, of Police Scotland 's Greater Glasgow Division, said: “My thoughts are very much with Phil, his wife Kelly and his family. What they are going through today is unimaginable.

"This illustrates, in the most tragic of ways, the dangers our officers face on a daily basis. Phil and his family are being cared for by specially trained officers and any support required is being made available for them and Phil's colleagues.

"The Police Scotland officers who dealt with the incident acted with the utmost professionalism and my thoughts are with them too this evening. I am also grateful to members of the public who assisted our officers at the scene."

Phil was treated at the scene then taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital , where staff say his condition remains serious.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing.

Road policing officers have issued an appeal for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

Sergeant Michael McCusker said: "We need anyone who was in the area at the time and who has information which will assist our inquiry to get in touch. Anyone who may have captured the collision on their vehicles' dashcam is also urged to come forward."
