Major office equipment firm Fuji Xerox Co. and Tokyo Metro Co. will launch an experiment in providing booth-like rental offices for individuals by setting up such booths at two Tokyo Metro subway stations from June, the companies have announced.
The experiment is aimed at making the most of train stations' convenience at a time when the number of people working outside of the office is increasing, thanks to the spread of notebook computers and smartphones.
The companies will install booths at Kitasenju and Tameikesanno stations, both of which are very busy with many commuters.
Each booth, about 2 meters tall, 1.6 meters wide and 1.1 meters deep, is equipped with a desk and chair, as well as Wi-Fi provided via a public local area network service and other tools necessary for a business-friendly environment.
Those who wish to use the booths can book a time via smartphone.
Working at a cafe or fast food restaurant can annoy other customers with phone conversations. There is also a risk of information being stolen.
As another benefit, providing "in-station offices" will make it easier for customers to use the service as they travel to and from places.
