Offense could open up more for Vikings if Kirk Cousins scrambles more in ’19

Last season, Kirk Cousins ran the ball 44 times for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Most of those runs were run for your life runs because of Minnesota’s offensive line struggle.

In 2019, the Vikings want their quarterback to run a little bit more, but not out of fear. Instead, to open up the offense during man coverage.

“I think it’s a positive in his game because he has the ability to leave the pocket when people play a lot of man and those type of things and keep us on the football field,” Vikings offensive advisor Gary Kubiak said Wednesday. “It’s something you talk about all the time. You don’t know how often it is going to happen in a game, but obviously you’ll be a good third down team if your quarterback has the ability to do that. The other night, we had a pretty good day third down-wise and one of those was because of him making a great play.”

Cousins has the ability to scramble more, and it seems like the Vikings have been giving him the freedom to do so. We’ll see if he does so.
