Off The Rails coffee shop replacing Caffe Nero outside Queen Street

Work is well underway to bring a brand new coffee shop to Glasgow's city centre.

Off the Rails is on track to open outside Queen Street at the former home of Cafe Nero on Dundas Street.

Unfortunately we don't know much more than that – as the coffee roasters are so cool they've yet to make any announcements on social media.

Indeed, apart from the colourful red signs outside proclaiming "fresh roasted coffee never tasted so good" , Off the Rails appear to be keeping the news of the opening to themselves for now.

Nevertheless, Off the Rails is expected to be a very welcome addition to the city centre coffee scene and we can't wait to visit!

The news of the new coffee shop opening comes after we revealed that the neighbouring site, the iconic Value pub, will also be turned into a cafe.

The Vale, which sat opposite the entrance to Queen Street Station on Dundas Street, had a loyal legion of punters before having to close for the Queen Street redevelopment works in 2016.

At the time, it was considered the pub would reopen on completion of the works, then set for 2020, however, pints haven't been poured for six years, with the space temporarily used as a ScotRail ticket office.

Now, Dundas House premises is being converted into a new coffee shop and event space, Kaffateria, which will serve 'locally roasted coffee, Glasgow-brewed craft beer and casual food to-go.

Plans for the conversion were submitted to Glasgow City Council in August of last year and are viewable in full here.

Looks like we'll have plenty of options when it comes to grabbing a last-minute coffee before our train departs. Bring on a bit of friendly competition - and hunners of iced lattes, please.
