Off licences ARE 'essential' and can remain open during coronavirus lockdown

Off-licences and breweries with their own shops have been added to the list of 'essential' retail shops which can stay open during the UK lockdown because of coronavirus.

The updated Government guidelines now include offies, as well as pubs, wine bars and other drinking establishments that have switched to sell and serve takeaway food.

The Government had already confirmed restaurants and cafes could remain open when Boris Johnson ordered pubs, clubs, gyms and other hospitality and leisure venues to close last week.

The new guidance is carefully worded to include pubs that are trying to stay open to serve take-out food to their communities.

"Food delivery and takeaway can remain operational and can be a new activity supported by the new permitted development right," the guidance states.

"This covers the provision of hot or cold food that has been prepared for consumers for collection or delivery to be consumed, reheated or cooked by consumers off the premises."

Off-licences join a list of retail outlets including supermarkets and food shops, health shops, pharmacies and chemists, petrol stations, bicycle shops, hardware shops, pet shops and Post Offices, which may remain open.

Online retailers can also remain open and postal and delivery services can run as normal, the guidance states.
