Off duty officer pulled man from the edge of car park roof - saving his life

An off-duty police officer ran to save a man who was planning on taking his on life.

Andy Taylor, a temporary sergeant for British Transport Police in Liverpool, was getting ready to leave on holiday with his family when he noticed a "dishevelled" man walking towards the wall of the multi-storey car park.

The man looked agitated and and was muttering that he'd "had enough" at the car park near Lime Street Station in Liverpool.

Dropping his suitcases Sergeant Taylor ran, with his wife Lisa, to the wall where the man was clinging to the side of the car park.

Temp Sgt Taylor said: “I was concerned about my children and I didn’t want to put them at risk, but I realised that I’ve got a duty to go and try and save this man. My wife was brilliant as well."

Sergeant Taylor and his wife tried to grab the man and pull him to safety.

Temp Sergeant Taylor added: “You’re never off duty. Even if you’re out with your family, you see something you go and deal with it. It’s just a natural instinct of being in the police.”

Once in the hands of the Taylors, the man decided he wanted to live and pleaded with the couple to pull him to safety.

Feeling his grip start to weaken Sgt Taylor shouted for help from passers-by while network rail staff called 999.

Sgt Taylor said it felt like an "eternity" before help arrived from another Network rail employee.

Temporary Sergeant Taylor has now been awarded a British Police Federation Award for Excellence for his bravery during the incident in October 2018.

He said: “I’m quite humbled to win the Award – it’s as much for my wife and kids as it is for me.”

Nigel Goodband, British Transport Police Federation Chairman said: “This incident proves that British Transport Police officers are never off duty. Temp Sgt Taylor and his wife Lisa showed incredible determination to save the man’s life. "
