Off-duty nurses help save swimmer with cold water shock

Two off-duty nurses raised the alarm and provided first aid after spotting a swimmer suffering from cold water shock.

The drama unfolded at around 3.15pm today (July 17) when the off-duty nurses on Hoylake beach saw a swimmer suffering from cold water shock. The nurses provided first aid assistance as the swimmer came ashore at Cubbins Green.

The volunteer crew of West Kirby RNLI Lifeboat arrived around ten minutes later. He was then taken to the nearby lifeboat station where he was treated for cold water shock.

A spokesperson for West Kirkby RNLI said the man had walked some distance to the beach before entering the sea. He then suffered from cold water shock which can reduce the ability to move and in some cases lead to a stroke.

Temperatures passed the 30C mark today on Merseyside. The public have been warned to stay out of the sun over the next two days.

Richard Diamond, West Kirby RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager said: ‘We would like to thank the two nurses for quickly contacting the Coastguard and supporting this gentleman. It is very easy to find yourself in such a situation and we urge people to phone 999 and ask for the Coastguard if you believe someone to be unwell on or beside the water. We are here and happy to help.”
