Off-duty nurse helps homeless woman give birth on side of road

An off-duty nurse who stopped to help a homeless woman give birth has been praised on social media.

Lorrainne Pingol was running late for work as she walked along Osmeña Avenue in Makati City, the Philippines, on Tuesday.

But her journey was soon interrupted when she heard a call for help from a woman nearby.

Responding to the plea, the 29-year-old walked in the direction of the sound and found a homeless woman giving birth by the side of the road.

Getting to the floor, she assisted the woman before eventually delivering a baby boy and cutting his umbilical cord.

Speaking to CNN Philippines, she said she made sure the pair were doing well before telling officials to take the new mum and son to hospital.

"When there are people who need our help whether outside or inside of work, we have to attend to those people in need," she said.

"We took an oath for that."

Speaking about the video of the delivery going viral on the internet, she said: "I was surprised because I did not expect that I will trend online"

She added that she is happy that she was able to give inspiration to people during the pandemic.
