Off-duty Garda arrested after failing roadside breath test at scene of crash in Cork

An off-duty Garda has been arrested after failing a roadside breath test in Cork on Saturday.

Gardai were called to the scene of a crash at the Silver Springs Hotel in the city at 5:30am.

Officers breathalysed the off-duty Garda who was then arrested and brought to Gurranabraher Garda station.

The man has since been released without charge.

Another person involved in the crash, who was driving a van, was treated for minor injuries at Cork University Hospital.

Gardai confirmed investigations into the incident are ongoing.

A Garda spokesperson said: "On 19th December 2020 shortly after 5:30am Gardaí attended at the scene of a traffic collision involving a car and van at Silver Springs Hill, Cork City.

"The driver of the car, an off duty member of An Garda Síochána, was arrested having failed a road side breath test for alcohol.

"He was taken to Gurranabraher Garda Station and later released without charge. The driver of the van was treated for minor injuries at Cork University Hospital. The investigation is ongoing."
