Off-duty Cicero cop’s gun stolen from car outside South Loop gym

Someone stole a gun from an off-duty Cicero police officer’s car after taking his keys from a locker June 18, 2019, at the LA Fitness at 1101 S. Canal St.

Someone stole a gun from an off-duty Cicero police officer’s car after breaking into his locker Tuesday at a South Loop gym.

The officer, a 43-year-old man, was at the LA Fitness at 1101 S. Canal St. when he realized the lock had been removed from his locker, according to Chicago police and Cicero town spokesman Ray Hanania. The break-in happened sometime between 1:14 and 2:33 p.m.

The man’s car keys were missing from inside the locker, and when he got back to his car in the parking garage it was unlocked, police said. He searched the vehicle and found that a gun had been stolen.

The gun and the car are both the officer’s personal property, Hanania said. The Cicero Police Department will conduct an internal investigation to make sure the officer had secured the weapon properly.

Police said no other lockers were reported broken into at the gym.

No one is in custody as Area Central detectives continue to investigate.
