Off-duty Chicago police officer in clown makeup arrested on suspicion of slapping on-duty officer

CHICAGO _ A Chicago police officer was arrested on three misdemeanor charges after slapping a fellow officer early Friday as she tried to enter a bar in Halloween makeup, officials said.

Someone at a bar in the 3700 block of North Broadway called police about 1:20 a.m. _ just after Halloween ended, according to Sally Bown, a spokeswoman for Chicago police.

The caller said "a 30-year-old (woman) was told she could not enter the establishment," Bown wrote in an email.

But the woman _ who later was found to be an off-duty Chicago police officer herself _ continued trying to get inside the bar, authorities said. Officers who responded found the woman and told her "she was prohibited from entering the establishment," Bown said.

Even after that, the woman, who police said appeared intoxicated, again tried to get into the bar. And again officers tried to stop her.

That's when the woman "became aggressive and struck an officer in the face with an open hand," Bown said.

Officers arrested Karina Salgado, 30, and she later was charged with resisting or obstructing an officer, battery, and criminal trespass to property, all misdemeanors, records show. She was released on her own recognizance.

Salgado's arrest location coincides with Charlie's Chicago.

Salgado has been a Chicago police officer for the past two years, police spokeswoman Kellie Bartoli said.

While an internal investigation takes place, Salgado has been reassigned to the department's Alternate Response Section, in which staffers field non-emergency calls and determine whether to send field officers or make a police report over the phone.
