Ofcom launches 'urgent' probe into David Icke coronavirus conspiracy comments on LondonLive

Ofcom bosses are launching a "full and urgent" investigation into David Icke 's coronavirus comments on LondonLive.

The notorious conspiracy theorist appeared on the channel at 10pm on Wednesday and sparked outrage by comparing Covid-19 vaccines to "fascism".

It sparked 41 complaints to the watchdog, and earlier today Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden called on Ofcom to launch a probe into the broadcast.

Now they have confirmed they are going ahead with a full investigation.

An Ofcom spokesperson told Mirror Online: "We have assessed this programme, and we are concerned that it raises potential issues under our rules.

"We are now investigating it as a matter of urgency."

When London Live posted a preview of the two-and-a-half-hour show on Twitter, it was met with fierce criticism.

One Twitter user called his words "deluded rambling" and many urged LondonLive to pull the interview from broadcast.

Icke's Twitter account spreads misinformation and has even denied the virus is real.

He has also linked the illness to 5G technology, and claimed a coronavirus vaccine will include "nanotechnology microchips" to control humans.

YouTube bosses have previously banned all conspiracy theory videos that falsely claim 5G causes coronavirus.

In a statement, LondonLive bosses told Mirror Online: "Last evening at 10pm, London Live broadcast a programme comprised of an interview with David Icke.

"We note that several commentators on social media have complained about our decision, however, we also note those complaints are about another interview with David Icke. We did not broadcast the interview which is the subject of the complaints on social media.

A spokesman added: "Commentators are confusing the interview broadcast last night with an interview with David Icke which was removed from YouTube. The interview London Live did broadcast is still available on YouTube.

"We of course respect Ofcom's decision to pursue whichever course of action it feels best regarding this totally separate interview with London Real and have been in contact with them this morning. We regret if we have given any rise to this confusion."
