Odsonne Edouard out of France Olympics squad as Celtic handed Champions League boost

Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard has not been named in France's Tokyo Olympics squad.

The forward could now be available for the club's Champions League second round qualifiers against Midtjylland in July.

Former interim boss John Kennedy had expressed uncertainty over whether the club would be able to call upon Edouard for the crucial clashes but he is not among the 18 Frenchmen selected for this summer's Games.

It had been reported the 23-year-old was set to be chosen by boss Sylvain Ripol but he won't be heading to Japan in the coming weeks, with the reason for his exclusion unclear.

The Olympics is not in FIFA's official calendar which means clubs are under no obligation to release their players for it.

But the tournament - set to run from July 22 to August 8 - would have ruled Edouard out of the Midtylland clashes on July 21 and 28.

Given the magnitude of the tie, set to be new boss Ange Postecoglou 's first competitive fixture in charge, he will be delighted to have last season's top scorer still in his ranks.

Edouard has been the subject of intense transfer speculation and could still leave Celtic in the transfer window as he enters the final year of his contract.

But a reunion with former boss Brendan Rodgers is off the cards after the Leicester City boss turned his attention to RB Leipzig's Patson Daka.

A deal to bring Edouard to the King Power Stadium now looks unlikely.
