Odsonne Edouard earns fitting nickname as Celtic star turns heads in France

His penchant for scoring against Rangers has already endeared him to the Celtic fans, who have dubbed him 'French Eddy'.

Now Odsonne Edouard is establishing a name for himself in his homeland, earning an endearing nickname of his own in the French media.

The 21-year-old continued his fine form for Les Espoirs on Thursday night, scoring twice in a 5-0 win over Azerbaijan.

That took his total to six goals in just three caps, with Edouard scoring a brace in each of them.

As a result, leading publication France Football has anointed him 'Monsieur Doublés', a nickname which probably doesn't need any translation.

"Never two without three," they noted, picking out Edouard as their star man from the match.

"Just like against Albania and the Czechs, Odsonne Edouard got a double against the Azeris."

Though he's got plenty of competition if he wants to get into the senior French side, Edouard is quickly catching the eye in his homeland.

Sports daily L'Équipe wrote: "The striker profited from the largesse of the opposition defence to improve his statistics in cold-blooded fashion."

Edouard was named man of the match by Le Parisien , who penned: "The player raised at PSG is in fine form, and the Celtic striker showed it again on the Calais grass of the Stade de l'Épopée.

"While his team-mates sometimes confused speed for haste, Edouard had the merit of putting Les Bleuets definitively in front after a nice touch to take him into the area, followed by a gentle strike which crept inside Ivanov's right post."

Edouard himself spoke about his form with the U21 side, speaking to La1Ere.

The Celtic man said: "I waited a really long time for my first Under-21 selection.

"Now that I've been called, I had my heart set on starting things the right way and making a mark on everyone's mind.

"I'm someone who never quits. I'm starting realising that time goes by, I'm going to have to get down to work diligently and launch my career once and for all."
