BERHAMPUR: Seven students of the government-run Parala Maharaja Engineering College here have been suspended for two weeks to one year for their alleged involvement in a clash between two groups on campus on August 1. A second-year student was injured in the scuffle.
The decision was taken on Saturday following a meeting of the college's disciplinary committee.
"The 16-member disciplinary committee spoke to some students and examined the footages of CCTVs installed on the campus before taking the decision," principal Ranjan Kumar Swain said.
This has led to resentment among the students. "The college authorities took the decision arbitrarily without taking the views of both sides," alleged one of the suspended students, adding that he will urge them to reconsider it.
Four sixth-semester students have been suspended from the college for a year, while another sixth-semester student has been debarred from all academic activities for two months. Similarly, two more students - a fourth and a sixth-semester one - have also been suspended for two weeks, while another fourth-semester student has been barred from the hostel for two months.
The college authorities, however, did not lodge any complaint with police. "Though we have not received any complaint from the college authorities, we are keeping an eye on the situation," SS Mohapatra, SDPO (Berhampur Sadar), said.
