Odisha: Ex-CBI director Uma Shanker Mishra dies

BHUBANESWAR: Former CBI director Uma Shankar Mishra (77), who was an Odisha cadre IPS officer of the 1968 batch, died due to old-age ailments at a private hospital in New Delhi on Thursday. Mishra headed the CBI for from December 6, 2003 to December 6, 2005.

“We mourn the demise of former CBI director Shri Uma Sankar Mishra, retired IPS officer of 1968 batch of Odisha cadre. Shri Mishra will be remembered for his professional excellence, integrity, humility and compassion. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace,” director general of police Abhay tweeted.

Mishra, a highly decorated officer, had got underworld don Abu Salem, who was wanted in 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai, extradited from Portugal in November 2005. A few years after his retirement, he had joined as guest editor of an Odia vernacular daily in Bhubaneswar in 2009.

Taking to Twitter, BJP’s national vice-president Baijayant Panda also mourned Mishra’s death.
