Odion Ighalo has been told that he is not the right player for Manchester United by a man who once tried to sign him, amid .
The Nigerian forward, 30, is at the centre of a race against time to complete a loan move from Shanghai Shenhua before the closure of Friday evening's transfer deadline.
The former Watford forward scored 39 goals in 99 appearances for the Hornets in two-and-a-half seasons between 2014 and 2017.
That total included an impressive 15 Premier League goals in 37 games for the Hornets in the 2015/16 season, and he was named as the Premier League's Player of the Month in December 2015.
Ighalo initially joined Changchun Yatai for two years, before his move to Shanghai in February last year.
The forward has netted 10 goals in 19 appearances for his current club, but according to the former Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock he isn't the type of player that United should be targeting.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Warnock said: "I tried to sign Ighalo when I was at Cardiff. His salary was over six figures a week, £100,000, something like that. His agent tells you one thing, then the other.
" Manchester United won't have that problem with the terms. I'm not sure he's the right player for United. He's not consistent and isn't the right type of player.
"They want young players. Why didn't they go for Danny Ings? He's someone similar to Marcus Rashford. It's desperation."
United are determined to bring in a forward in the remaining hours of the window, and have seen an enquiry for Bournemouth's Josh King knocked back.
