Odeon to reopen Scottish cinemas later this month as lockdown expected to ease further

Odeon will reopen its Scottish cinemas from later this month as the coronavirus lockdown continues to ease.

The cinema chain was forced to close all of its UK branches late last year as the pandemic took hold of the country.

But now bosses at the firm say that it hopes to open cinemas from May 17, depending on government guidelines.

The Scottish Government is expected to move Scotland to level two lockdown restrictions on that date, paving the way for cinemas to reopen.

Customers will have to adhere to rules on social distancing in a bid to safeguard fellow punters and workers from coronavirus.

The times of screenings will be more spread out than usual to reduce queuing in the foyers.

Scots will also be encouraged to book tickets online and order pre-packaged food and drink.

A range of hand sanitisers will be available throughout cinemas and each screen will undergo extensive cleaning between shows.

Customers will also have to wear a face covering when they are inside the cinema, but can remove them when they are eating or drinking.

It is unclear as to what will be shown from the reopening date as the film industry continues to be heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

A summer reopening of Odeon branches last year was blighted by a lack of new blockbuster releases - with the new James Bond film being a notable omission from schedules.

No Time to Die, Dune and The Matrix 4 are just some of the films hoped to be released in cinemas later this year.

Odeon pointed to recent research from MetrixLab which found that 59% of people say that the cinema is one of the activities they miss the most.
