Odeon to give Holloway Road cinema a luxury makeover in London investment plans

Cinemas chain Odeon shrugged off competition from streaming services on Tuesday as managing director Mark Way outlined “multi-million pound” plans to give some of its London venues a luxury makeover.

Way said five sites, such as existing ones like Holloway Road in north London and some being built like Marble Arch, will get a “Luxe” design similar to its flagship Leicester Square branch.

That means fully reclining seats, upmarket bars and more food outlets. It is the latest wave of Odeon cinemas set to get the ‘Luxe’ design.

Way said: “Cinema audiences have trebled since the 1980s despite the rise of TV and streaming services, thanks to strong film slates, investment in cinemas and because consumers are still willing to pay for affordable, enjoyable experiences.”

The update came shortly after Disney said Lion King, which had its UK premiere at Odeon Leicester Square this month, took over £16.7 million this weekend in Britain to record the second biggest box office weekend of the year here.
