Odeon in Bristol city centre closes due to 'ongoing delays' to release of new films

A cinema located on one of the busiest streets in Bristol city centre has closed.

A spokesperson for Odeon told Bristol Live its branch in Union Street will be shut "temporarily", but could not say when it will reopen.

They said the closure is due to the "ongoing delays to the release of many new films".

The announcement comes after Odeon announced it is shutting a quarter of its cinemas during the week and only open them at weekends, due to a lack of Hollywood blockbusters being released and the coronavirus keeping movie-goers at home.

Speaking about the Bristol closure, the Odeon spokesperson said: "In light of the ongoing delays to the release of many new films, we will be temporarily closing Odeon Bristol.

"We will be refunding guests for any pre-purchased tickets and are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

"We will inform our guests as soon as we have more information about reopening, and look forward to welcoming them back soon."

When Bristol Live asked the spokesperson when the cinema will reopen, the spokesperson added there was "nothing to add beyond that statement".

'No Time To Die', the latest James Bond installment, was the most recent major release to be pushed back to next year.

The film, which sees Daniel Craig play the character for the final time, is now scheduled to hit cinemas in April 2021 - a year later than planned.

On Monday another major cinema operator, Cineworld, said it was temporarily suspending operations at all of its 127 sites in the UK from today (Thursday, October 8).

Less than one week before this announcement, a Cineworld spokesperson told Bristol Live the company was "optimistic" about being able to reopen its Bristol cinema in Hengrove.

Odeon in Union Street is located in the same building as clothing retailer H&M, which is set to close and make way for a Lidl supermarket.
