Odeon and Cineworld close amid coronavirus outbreak following latest government advice

A number of cinema chains have closed following recent government advice issued on the coronavirus outbreak.

Odeon, as well as Cineworld and Picturehouse, have said they are to shut its cinemas across the UK until further notice.

Odeon posted a statement to their official Twitter account that read: “Following Government guidelines, Odeon cinemas are closed until further notice.

“If you have pre-booked tickets online these will be refunded automatically.”

Cinewold and Picturehouse said their closure will take place from Wednesday, March 18, and in Ireland starting on Tuesday.

Cineworld Group CEO, Mooky Greidinger said: “At Cineworld and Picturehouse we are committed to providing safe and healthy environments for our employees and guests and have therefore made the difficult decision to close our cinemas in the UK and Ireland until further notice.

“We deeply value our cinema-loving customers and have no doubt we will be serving everyone again as soon as possible with a full slate of Hollywood blockbusters and the best of independent films and content.”

The closures follow escalated measures taken by the UK government following a Cobra meeting late on Monday afternoon.

Mr Johnson warned the public to avoid non-essential contact with people and travel, while people were asked to work from home where possible.

He also advised to “stay away” from pubs and restaurants, which has received backlash from the hospitality industry.

As of 9am on Monday, March 16, a total of 44,105 people in the UK have been tested for the virus, with 1,543 tested positive.

The death toll has reached 55.
