Odds stacked against Liverpool gaining Premier League title favour as Man City look to reclaim top spot

Liverpool sit atop the Premier League table courtesy of Sunday's last-minute win over Tottenham Hotspur, but even the most ardent of supporters won't be holding up much hope for them still being there when they travel to Southampton on Friday.

With reigning champions Manchester City in FA Cup semi-final action this weekend, Pep Guardiola's side's clash with Cardiff City has been brought forward with the two sides set to lock horns at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Spaniard had hoped to see his retain top spot heading into his side's clash with the Bluebirds, only for Toby Alderweireld's own goal to hand Jurgen Klopp's side victory just as they looked destined to drop points.

Asked what he felt when Liverpool grabbed a fortunate late winner, Guardiola said: "S***."

Now it is the turn of Reds to anxiously look towards their title-rivals, watching on from afar and hoping for an upset. Don't count on it.

Having surprised many by winning promotion from the Championship last year, Neil Warnock's side inevitably find themselves in a relegation battle as the season nears its final weeks.

Huddersfield Town became the first side to suffer the drop last weekend, while Fulham won't be too far behind following back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, Cardiff City still have a fighting chance, albeit a slim one.

Warnock had vowed to play his side's Under-23s in Manchester following Sunday's controversial late defeat to Chelsea, though he has since backtracked.

That loss left the South Wales outfit five points behind 17th-placed Burnley but boasting a game in hand. Just a shame that outstanding match is away at Manchester City then.

Their chances of surviving this year appear slim, but their hopes of picking up points at Etihad Stadium are even slimmer.

City have won 15 of their 16 home matches in the top-flight this year with Crystal Palace the only side to pull off a shock.

They have emerged victorious in all but one of their matches in 2019.

In contrast, Cardiff have lost four of their last five matches, have won just twice away from home all season and haven't picked up a single point against any of the Premier League's top six.

Such is the the magnitude of the task facing Cardiff, bookmakers Paddy Power have declared the fixture the most one-sided game in Premier League history.

Warnock's men are priced at 80/1 to win away against the reigning champions. This represents around a 1.2% chance, with a once in 80 shot the longest odds Paddy Power have ever offered on a Premier League victory. And that's despite the Premier League's leading goalscorer Sergio Aguero set to miss the game through injury.

It surpasses the previous record-holders Huddersfield, who were twice as likely at 40/1 to win away at City last season – where the game actually ended in a 0-0 draw.

However, the biggest league upset this season was Man City’s 3-2 loss to Crystal Palace in December, who were rated 20/1 to win before the game.

Spokesman Paddy Power said: “Cardiff are record-breakers for us, as they are officially our largest price ever to win a Premier League game in history – though it’s not necessarily one you’d want to brag about.

“Though after Neil Warnock’s display against Chelsea, I’d say we can safely assume he would beat Pep Guardiola in a staring contest. So, at least there’s that…”
