Bookmakers have slashed the odds on Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff making the cut for Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad.
Following an impressive display against Manchester United, Oddschecker report that some bookies have cut the odds on Longstaff making the 23-man squad next summer to 16/1.
His price has been slashed by more than half from 40/1 although one bookmaker is still offering odds of 20/1 for Longstaff to make it to his first international tournament.
The fall in price is due to a considerable number of bets being placed following Newcastle’s victory over the Red Devils. Indeed 26% of all bets being placed on which midfielders will make the 23 man squad have been placed on Longstaff.
Longstaff is a more popular bet than more established names such as Ross Barkley (12%) Dele Alli (2%) and Jesse Lingard (1%).
Football stats website WhoScored.com have revealed that Longstaff’s match rating of 7.79 was the best of his career to date. Newcastle’s victory over Manchester United saw Sean and his brother Matty Longstaff picked in the their Europe-wide U21 team of the week.
England’s central midfield position is very much up for grabs. Longstaff’s impressive performances dating back to last season will undoubtedly see the calls for England selection become louder.
Southgate is not blessed with an array of talented central midfield players and the emergence of the older Longstaff brother will give the England manager something to think about.
