Odds slashed on April being hottest ever in Ireland as temperatures to soar to 21C

Punters are banking on this April being the hottest ever in Ireland, as temperatures are set to soar to highs of 21C on Thursday.

As the glorious sunny spell continues across the nation, the bookies now make it just a 4/6 shot for this month to be the hottest April on record.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: "We have been treated to a long spell of sunny weather and the forecast suggests it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

"With some sizzling spells on the way, we are odds-on to have a record-breaking month."

However, temperatures would have to hit almost 26C to break the existing record.

According to Met Eireann data, our warmest April on record was on April 26, 1984, when temperatures hit a toasty 25.8C in Glenties, Co Donegal.

After more sizzling spring sunshine yesterday afternoon, Wednesday looks set to be the second warmest day of the week, with highs of 15C to 19C.

A Met Eireann forecaster revealed: "Dry and sunny across most of the country, although some patchy cloud will develop in parts of Munster and Connacht during the afternoon and evening."

Eastern counties will be slightly cooler in a light to moderate east to northeast breeze.

Meanwhile, Thursday will be the warmest day of the week yet with the mercury hitting highs of 20C to 21C.

Thursday night will be dry with long clear spells and possibly some patches of mist and fog.

It will feel chilly under clear skies, with lows of 3C to 7C.

Meanwhile, Friday is promising to be another mild day, with dry and mainly sunny conditions and highs of 16C to 20C, warmest in inland counties.
