I've just come across this extraordinary tale that dates from nine days ago when it was first reported that Vivian Smith had been fired from a Canadian daily paper, the Victoria Times-Colonist, part of the CanWest media empire. Her contract as the paper's resident writing coach and columnist was terminated the day after after the chief executive of Victoria's tourism industry, which advertises in the paper, met the publisher to complain about one of Smith's columns. Smith says the Times-Colonist editor, Lucinda Chodan, told her that "the publisher does not base editorial decisions on advertisers". However, no-one can explain any other reason for Smith's dismissal. (Via publiceyeonline.com)
