Occupants escape unharmed moments before car bursts into flames

Video shows the moment a car burst into flames in a suburban street - moments after the occupants got out.

The drama happened on Oak Road in Cheadle, near Stockport, shortly before 10am on Saturday. The car, believed to be a BMW X3, was destroyed but the occupants escaped unharmed before firefighters arrived at the scene.

Residents at first feared the fire could spread to other vehicles or even properties. But firefighters using breathing gear extinguished the blaze before it spread.

Video of the fire, which has been shared on social media, showed the vehicle ablaze, and a huge plume of black smoke billowing into the air.

One resident, Carrie-Anne Connor, said the occupants got out when smoke started pouring out of the engine.

She added: "It was bonkers! Never seen it in real life before. Everyone got out fine. Everyone was panicking because it's so close to houses but no injuries at all.

"It all just happened really suddenly."

A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 10am on Saturday, April 1, firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle fire on Oak Road, in Cheadle.
