Ocado tells customers orders have been cancelled after fire at warehouse

Online retailer Ocado has called off a number of orders after a fire at one of its London warehouses on Wednesday.

The company said that a "small fire" was reported and later extinguished at its facility in Erith, south-east London, on Wednesday night.

Some customer orders have been cancelled as a result. Affected shoppers will be offered a re-booking for Friday.

It is the second fire reported at an Ocado facility this year. In February the company suffered a £142.8million loss after its Andover warehouse was destroyed in a blaze.

However, on Thursday, bosses confirmed that no part of its material handling equipment was involved in the incident - while the exact cause of the fire remains unknown.

The blaze comes just weeks after Marks & Spencer announced it had acquired a 50% in Ocado in a move that will see it launch a home delivery service for the first time.

The upmarket supermarket confirmed the deal on August 5 - six months after first speaking of a potential £750million merger.

The tie-up will allow shoppers to choose from over 6,500 M&S food products when shopping online at Ocado.com.

This will be in addition to Ocado’s own brands and own label products and full range of branded goods.

However, the website will not start selling M&S products until 1 September 2020, when its arrangement with Waitrose terminates.
