'Obviously': Enzo Fernandez makes bold World Cup prediction as Argentina eye title defence

Enzo Fernandez has no doubt Argentina will be able to defend their World Cup title this summer despite their tumultuous preparations.

The Chelsea midfielder scored the opener as Argentina claimed a 2-1 friendly victory over Mauritania in Buenos Aires on Friday.

The world champions had been due to face Spain in Qatar in the Finalissima on Friday instead, but the tie was cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, leaving Lionel Scaloni’s team to face a side ranked 115th in the world by FIFA instead.

Adding to a frustrating March international break was the news that Ligue 1 top scorer, Strasbourg’s Joaquín Panichelli, had torn his ACL, ruling him out of this summer’s finals. It is not immediately clear who will replace him in the squad.

Despite the frustrating build-up to the tournament, though, Fernandez maintains that Argentina are well placed to repeat the heroics of Qatar 2022.

Asked how he rates his side’s chances ahead of the tournament, he told ESPN Argentina: “Very well. We’re going to defend the title, obviously.

“We know these matches are preparations and we’ll give our best to arrive in top form.”

Argentina were not quite at their best against Mauritania, which Fernandez put down to a sub-par playing surface.

“I have somewhat strange feelings about the match. The pitch wasn't in good condition, and we weren't able to show much of our style of play. It's useful for what's to come, being with the group and refreshing the coach's ideas.”

He continued, adding the team had dedicated their win to the injured Panichelli and promising to help his replacement integrate into the side.

“We dedicated the victory to him. It's truly sad when something like that happens to a teammate. I wish him a speedy recovery.

“The group was a bit shaken by what happened. We wish him all the best and a quick recovery.

“Every time I have the opportunity to talk to a new teammate, to support him, give him confidence, and encourage him to show what he does at his club. That's what builds the national team: the unity and strength we have.”

Argentina return to action in the small hours of Wednesday morning for UK-based viewers, hosting Zambia in Buenos Aires.
