'Obvious frailties' - What the national media made of Leeds United's defeat to West Ham

Leeds United are now two games without a win in the Premier League after back-to-back defeats against Chelsea and West Ham United.

The Hammers were 2-1 winners at Elland Road on a night where VAR dominated the headlines once again.

However, so too did Leeds' inability to successfully defend set pieces with Angelo Ogbonna's goal moving Marcelo Bielsa's side to the very top of the 'free kick goals conceded' table (seven).

That could prove a nightmare for Leeds between now and the end of the season with the likes of Chelsea, Everton Southampton and the Hammers all thriving from set-pieces this term.

Here is how the national media reacted to last night's defeat...

The Guardian: 'Obvious frailties'

As the West Ham players headed en masse for Angelo Ogbonna following the full-time whistle here, the celebrations seemed to have just as much relief attached to them as they did jubilation.

Bielsa gives his thoughts on Leeds United 1-2 West Ham

Prior to Ogbonna’s header 10 minutes from time which consigned Leeds to another home defeat, you felt as though a combination of profligacy from the visitors and the heroics of Illan Meslier would leave West Ham heading back to London with just a point, rather than the three which ultimately moved them up to fifth before the rest of the weekend’s action.

But this West Ham side, who continue to show promising signs under David Moyes, are nothing if not determined. Even after Ogbonna’s winner, it was the visitors who pressed for another goal, as opposed to Leeds scrambling for an equaliser which, on the balance of play, they arguably would not have deserved given the dominance of their opponents.

Leeds have obvious frailties at the back, underlined not only by both West Ham goals coming from set-pieces, but the fact only West Bromwich Albion have conceded more goals than Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season. However, the sheer litany of chances West Ham created emphasised they are moving in the right direction this season.

Sky Sports: 'They stay 14th'

West Ham moved up to fifth in the Premier League table as headed goals from Tomas Soucek and Angelo Ogbonna secured a 2-1 victory at Leeds on Friday Night Football.

Leeds took an early lead as Mateusz Klich scored from the penalty spot at the second time of asking after VAR had ruled Lukasz Fabianski, who brought down Patrick Bamford to give away the spot-kick, to be off his line in saving the initial penalty.

However, the hosts' problems from set pieces continued to haunt them as Soucek brought the Hammers level in the 25th minute before Ogbonna sealed all three points 10 minutes from time.

Victory sees David Moyes's side leap up to fifth, four points behind league leaders Tottenham Hotspur and second-placed Liverpool. Meanwhile, Leeds stay 14th following a sixth defeat of the season.

BBC Sport: 'Keep getting caught out'

West Ham boss David Moyes said the video assistant referee is making "terrible decisions" in the Premier League, despite seeing his side fight back to beat Leeds and move up to fifth.

Leeds had gone in front when Mateusz Klich converted a twice-taken sixth-minute penalty, with VAR ordering the retake after ruling keeper Lukasz Fabianski had stepped off his goal line.

However, the visitors, who had won just once on the previous 26 occasions when they had conceded first in a Premier League game, levelled when Illan Meslier failed to stop Tomas Soucek's soft header and won it with 10 minutes to go through Angelo Ogbonna's header.

While the Hammers, who registered their first victory at Elland Road in 20 years, have now won four games out of five and seem destined for a good season under manager David Moyes, Leeds continue to flatter to deceive, having now collected eight points from the past nine games and just one from their past four on home soil.

Although their adventurous approach is admirable, they keep getting caught out by wise opposition and have conceded seven goals from set-pieces this season, the joint highest in the league with Leicester City.

The Telegraph: 'Struggle again'

David Moyes is unlikely to ever make the Fifa shortlist for the world’s best coach, as Marcelo Bielsa did on the day of this game, but he led West Ham to an impressive and hugely deserved victory over Leeds United, overcoming yet another Var controversy, that lifted them up to fifth in the Premier League. The Moyesiah is on the rise.

For all of the brilliance of Bielsa’s football, and yet again this was an outstanding, thrilling, end-to-end match, his team was undone in the most routine of manners as they yet again conceded from set-pieces having taken the lead and remain firmly in the bottom half of the table.

That is seven goals this season and no other side has let in more as they have also now lost half their games.
