Obsessive ex-boyfriend swung machete at window after assaulting former partner

An obsessive boyfriend smashed a window with a machete after assaulting his ex partner at her home.

Mark Broad, 34, arrived at Samantha Evans' house in Pontypool uninvited on August 1, 2020, became angry after his arrival wasn't acknowledged and entered the address before overturning a sofa she was sitting on.

He then dragged Ms Evans by her jumper to the hallway and slapped her across the face.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday heard Broad went into the back garden, grabbed a foot-long machete with a serrated edge and swung it at a downstairs toilet window.

Police were called to the address and were greeted by Ms Evans, who was crying and upset, and said: "Be careful he's got a machete."

The defendant was then made subject to a restraining order preventing him from contacting Ms Evans but he continued messaging her and on December 14 he made contact with her father, asking him to pass on a message to her.

As a result of this unsolicited contact, Broad served six weeks imprisonment and eight weeks imprisonment respectively.

In a victim personal statement read out to the court by prosecutor Meirion Davies, Ms Evans said: "Since this incident my mental health has seriously declined... I live in constant fear and have had cameras installed at my property.

"Broad has constantly breached bail conditions and has no regard for anything. This had frightened me and I constantly worry he will turn up at my address, I don't know what he's capable of.

"I feel there's no escape from this and has tainted my life and the lives of my children."

Broad, of Clos y Goedlan, Garndiffaith, in Torfaen, later pleaded guilty to common assault, possession of a bladed article in a public place, criminal damage and breach of a restraining order.

Defence barrister Gareth Williams said there was "no justification" for the way Broad had behaved but described him as feeling "devastated" following the end of the relationship, which he failed to grasp.

He said following short periods of custody, the defendant knew what awaited him should he fail to follow court orders in future.

Sentencing, Recorder Mark Powell QC said: "Ms Evans was petrified, there's no doubt about that.

"You have subjected this lady to a course of conduct of some six months which has inspired terror in her and significantly affected her mental health."

Broad was sentenced to a total of 15 months imprisonment suspended for two years. He was also made subject to a supervision order, 10 days rehabilitation activity requirement, 100 hours unpaid work and a restraining order of two years.
