The supernatural horror film 'Obsession' has emerged as one of the biggest surprise box-office successes of the decade. Made on a modest budget of around $750,000, the movie has grossed more than $286 million worldwide since its release on May 15. However, despite its massive success, director Curry Barker says he is not rushing into a sequel.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Barker revealed that he already has a "cool idea" for Obsession 2. However, he stressed that he wants to approach the project carefully and does not plan to jump straight into developing a sequel.
"I have a cool idea," Barker said, adding that he does not want to "go straight into *Obsession 2."
Starring Inde Navarrette as Nikki, Michael Johnston as Bear, Cooper Tomlinson as Ian, and Megan Lawless as Sarah, Obsession has captivated audiences with its supernatural "be careful what you wish for" storyline. The film's extraordinary box-office performance has made it one of the most profitable horror releases in recent years.
While Barker has remained tight-lipped about how the mysterious One Wish Willow could be explored in future projects, he has previously discussed the possibility of turning Obsession into an anthology franchise. Speaking to Total Film, he suggested that future stories could follow different characters whose wishes lead to unexpected and often devastating consequences.
"This just happens to be a premise where there is a lot more to be done. It's not really a sequel," Barker explained. "It's just a new guy or girl with a One Wish Willow: What does she wish for, and how did that mess up her life? There's so many stories to be told."
His comments suggest that any future installment may expand the universe rather than continue the story of the original characters.
Meanwhile, Barker is also set to direct a new entry in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said he aims to bring a fresh perspective to the iconic horror series while staying true to the spirit of the 1974 original.
"I wouldn't be interested if I didn't think I could find a way in that feels fresh and new, while still respecting the original," Barker said. "I want to make a new generation of people scared."
For now, Obsession 2 has not been officially confirmed, but Barker's comments indicate that the door remains open for future stories set in the film's supernatural world.
