Obsessed killer made girlfriend his sexual plaything and sought to control and monitor her behaviour

A jealous and controlling ex-boyfriend who savagely murdered his defenceless partner tried to make her his "sexual plaything".

Carl Harrison flew into a rage when tragic Rachel Evans threatened to leave him after his continual domestic abuse.

The 47-year-old often made derogatory remarks about her, calling her a "slag" and a "whore," Liverpool Crown Court heard.

The mum-of-five told police he wanted to have sex all the time and would often paw at her body and "try it on," prosecutor Ian Unsworth, QC, said.

Ms Evans, 46, was adamant she never had intercourse against her will, although she did reveal one occasion when he smacked her private parts, and described it as his "property".

More of his strict rules emerged, including her not being allowed to use a telephone after 7pm because he wanted her "undivided attention" .

Harrison, Mr Unsworth said, would not allow Ms Evans to wear pyjamas in bed, and stressed that she had to be naked.

"He liked her to walk around naked in the morning.

"She gave other details suggesting that the defendant sought to control her.

"She said that in the beginning the relationship was 'nice' but that a few months into the relationship he began to call her names.

"He would accuse her of being unfaithful with everyone in St Helens and he would say derogatory things about her parents who had passed away."

Once, the caretaker at the flat where they lived was told by Ms Evans that her boyfriend was an "evil b***ard."

Thirteen days before the murder, Harrison threatened to kill Ms Evans after she summoned up the courage to inform him she wished their relationship to finish.

He grabbed her throat and vowed to end her life if she took that course of action.

Police visited Ms Evans on March 8, two days before the murder. She described the sexually-orientated violence she was subjected to by her ex, but declined to make a complaint and said she would not support a prosecution as she "wished him no harm" .

On the night of the murder, Harrison persuaded her to come to his home in Hignett Avenue, St Helens, after his mum had grown so fed up with their arguing that she moved out of her own property.

There, he inflicted more than 100 slash and stab wounds on her.

After the shocking assault, Harrison tried to move his ex-girlfriend's body around the flat, even attempting to clean some of her wounds in the bathroom.

Later, running out of options, he wrapped up Ms Evans' bleeding body and put her in bed, where emergency services discovered her.

After being cautioned and informed that he was being arrested on suspicion of murder, Harrison bluntly confessed, saying: "I have murdered her."

Paramedics who attended the Hignett Avenue scene saw a "large horrific neck wound" and a number of stab wounds to the breasts could be seen.

Judge Andrew Menary, QC, the Recorder of Liverpool, imposed a life sentence on Harrison and ordered he serve a minimum of 18 years and 25 days behind bars before he can be considered for parole.

He said: "Together you had been in a relationship for about a year... although there was no direct violence until the latter weeks, it was a relationship marked by frequent unpleasant arguments principally because of your irrational jealousy of Rachel's past relationships and your desire to dominate her life and restrict her movements."

Harrison, it was heard, had bipolar affective disorder, with traits of an unstable personality disorder, and was "chronically dependent on alcohol".

And the judge added: "You used a flick knife to repeatedly stab Rachel all over her body, to her head, face, neck, the front of her body, both breasts, her back, her arms, hands and legs.

"There were some 52 groups of injuries involving something over 100 separate stabbing actions.

"There was a concentration of incised wounds to the front of the neck, effectively destroying her throat and vital blood vessels in that area and a huge wound to the genitalia region - this last dreadful injury perhaps being caused after death.

"Many of the injuries to Rachel's arms and hands are likely to have been defensive would, indicting her desperate attempts to fend off the attack.

"She plainly did not stand a chance."

It was not until midday the following day when Harrison, who pleaded guilty to murder, making threats to kill and assault, in relation to the earlier attack, contacted his sister who in turn contacted police.
