Observer writer wins One World Media Award

Observer feature writer Tim Adams has won the One World Media Award in the Press category for his piece Out in Africa: Why the Kenyan author Binyavanga Wainaina has spoken out about being gay.

The awards reward the most outstanding coverage of developing countries and recognise the critical role of journalists and filmmakers in increasing cultural understanding and supporting equality and justice worldwide.

The judges praised Tim’s piece as “A highly readable story of one man’s decision to challenge the homophobic attitudes of his native country.”

Tim Adams said: “I was very honoured to receive this year’s One World Media Press Award. The One World Awards are valuable not only in their recognition of a great range of storytelling, but also for the light that is shed as a result on often underreported lives. One World Media’s own commitment to funding and advancing such storytelling, in places where a diverse and free press is often under threat, makes the awards particularly meaningful.”
