Some restaurants have banned it. Others are keen on the free publicity. Whether you think it's turning the quotidian into art or simply the height of bad manners, taking photographs of breakfast, lunch or dinner is now commonplace.
It's a trend that has also produced some great imagery. To celebrate, there's a new category in this year's Observer Food Monthly Awards: best food photography.
We'd like to see your best work, whether you're showing off a home-cooked meal, documenting a visit to a great restaurant or capturing the finest produce at your local farmer's market. Share your images using GuardianWitness and the best will be published on the site.
The winning image will be chosen by OFM's judges and published in the October edition of the magazine.
