In what should be our last Odell Beckham Jr. post (unless someone signs him and plays the Cleveland Browns), the talented but difficult receiver went unclaimed today on waivers. No team was willing to pay him $7.25 million dollars to play for them this year.
Beckham is now a free agent able to sign with whatever team he would like that also has interest in him. There have been rumblings that the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks could be his next team as he reaches free agency for the first time.
Some have also wondered if the New England Patriots could be a destination.
Due to some details in his restructured contract, the Browns will save $3.25 million in cap space from Beckham’s release. If another team would have claimed him, Cleveland would have saved the entire $7.25 million but that seemed unlikely from the start.
The Browns have already spent some of the future money locking guard Wyatt Teller up to a four-year contract extension today.
Following his arrival in a trade orchestrated by then-GM John Dorsey, Beckham failed to live up to expectations. His best year came under Freddie Kitchens but even that was far less than his history led many to believe was coming.
The Beckham, Browns saga is officially over (until/unless Beckham plays Cleveland in the future).
