Former Omron Corp. President Yoshio Tateishi died on Tuesday. He was 80.
Tateishi, the company's honorary advisor and until recently the chairman of the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), was infected with the new coronavirus and had been hospitalized since April 5.
Tateishi is the third son of Omron founder Kazuma Tateishi. After graduating from Doshisha University's economics department in 1962, Tateishi joined Omron's predecessor, Tateisi Electric Manufacturing Co. Serving as president from 1987 to 2003, he actively expanded his company overseas and doubled its sales, earning a reputation as the company's restorer.
He served as KCCI chairman for five terms starting in 2007 and retired in March.
Tateishi started feeling fatigue on April 1 and was found to have a fever the following day. On April 5, he visited a medical institution and was diagnosed with pneumonia. He tested positive for the new coronavirus on April 6 and was undergoing treatment.
His funeral will soon be held by relatives.
