Jon Obika admits his overhead kick looked good - but he'd have swapped it for six tap-ins

Jon Obika was St Mirren’s hero on Saturday with a terrific acrobatic first goal for the club, setting up a 2-0 win over St Johnstone.

The Englishman was delighted with his first half strike, which was added to by a second half Danny Mullen goal to seal the win in Paisley.

However, the 29-year-old admits he’d probably rather have scored a few tap-ins than wait this long to open his Buddies account.

He said: “I’d have taken six goals over a spectacular goal, but I’m just happy to get off the mark and get three points. That’s the main thing.

“I can just relax and play my ball now.

“I just want to get as many shots as I can in a game and get into positions where I can affect the game.

“During Saturday’s game, we had a lot of chances and that’s what we need to do going forward.

“The boys showed me a picture of the overhead kick and I looked good in the air. I’m just happy it came off.”

Obika’s stunning effort came after 36 minutes and turned the game on its head.

Up until that point, the hosts’ attack had looked blunt, with St Johnstone enjoying the best of the early chances. Mullen added the second just after the hour mark.

“The goal gave us energy to build on as we knew we could score another goal,” added Obika.

Manager Jim Goodwin congratulates Obika on his goal (SNS Group)

“Danny made the result clearer for us and we could have got three or four.

“We always go into the game looking to win and that was the message from the gaffer.

“To back ourselves and go out and show what we can do — that was the key for us.

“Defensively, St Johnstone didn’t cause us too many problems, so it was up to us to take the game to them in their half.

“We can breathe a bit easier now, but the next one is just as important as we need points on the board.”

Gaffer Jim Goodwin was another person going home happy and was full of praise for his number nine and fellow frontman Mullen.

He said: “The first goal was a bit of individual brilliance from Jon. He showed real athleticism to put the ball in the back of the net the way he did, and the second one was really pleasing from a coaching perspective.

“Jon’s really well thought of in the dressing room.

“The players are delighted for him. Not only his goal, but his all round contribution. I hope he can do it more consistently from here on in.”
