Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer breakdown: our first glimpse at the new Star Wars series

The new trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi, the new Star Wars Disney+ series coming out on May 27, has been released. The clip, which is just 1 minute 30 seconds long, has already racked up over six million views in less than 24 hours as fans got another glimpse of the Jedi Master- 10 long years after the events of Revenge of the Sith.

The six-part series will see Ewan McGregor reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi - and the trailer gives us everything fans could have hoped for.

Obi-Wan is watching over a young Luke Skywalker on the desert planet Tatooine when a chase-adventure ensues. As the teaser opens McGregor says, “They are coming. Stay hidden, or we will not survive” – an eerie start.

A spaceship speeds through black clouds; Stormtroopers walk through the new city Daiyu; the Grand Inquisitor, Third Sister and Fifth Brother march through a white city; there is footage of a 10-year-old Luke; there are chase scenes; battles scenes, lightsaber and blasters, and new droids.

“I want every bounty hunter, every low life, to squeeze him,” shouts a voice as the trailer reaches its denouement. “You can’t escape him.” Him meaning Darth Vader, we assume.

Plot-wise nothing major has been revealed, and everything is to play for: Revenge of the Sith ended extremely badly with Anakin Skywalker, Kenobi’s best friend and Jedi apprentice turning to the dark side and becoming Sith Lord Darth Vader.

The trailer closes with Darth Vader’s deep breathing. The new series also marks the return of Hayden Christensen in the role, and a face-off between the two old friends is absolutely on the cards.

In under two minutes, there’s already so much to unpack. Here’s our breakdown of the trailer - and the little Easter eggs that the show’s creators left us to enjoy...

Darth Vader

Finally, fans get to see a little of the dark lord, as well as hear his breathing, as we see his mechanical arm being screwed onto his body. It’s giving that same feeling as someone pulling up their gloves in an operating theatre – but even more ominous – and we’re a little scared.

We also see Vader’s chest piece being pushed back into his body. He’s preparing for something – perhaps to destroy Obi-Wan and wreak havoc across the universe as he does.

Purge Troopers

Purge Troopers are a new kind of Stormtrooper, and fans get a glimpse of the new unit in the trailer. In fact, you see them from numerous angles in different fighting scenes.

We first met the Purge Troopers in Marvel’s 2017 comic book series Darth Vader, and they also popped up in the video game Jedi: Fallen Order, but this is the first time we’re seeing them on the screen, in live-action too.

4-LOM

We know from the trailer that Kenobi is being chased – in fact, it seems like everyone is after him. Protocol-droid 4-LOM, one of the famous bounty hunters from The Empire Strikes Back, is back and we see a very quick clip of the droid toting two guns on a rooftop. This is an hugely exciting return for Star Wars fans.

Luke Skywalker

The trailer also reveals that Obi-Wan wants to train Luke in the ways of the force. He says, “When the time comes he must be trained.”

“Leave us alone,” says Uncle Owen (Joel Edgerton). “Like you trained his Father?” – Ouch!

Reva

Reva, aka The Third Sister, will be played by American actress Moses Ingram, best known for playing Jolene in The Queen’s Gambit. She’s an Imperial Inquisitor and is all over the trailer. In fact, by the looks of it, she is the one conducting the chase of the Jedi Master. It’s likely that it’s her voice shouting those terrifying commands over the end of the trailer, too.

The Grand Inquisitor

We see The Grand Inquisitor walking through the streets, with Reva and The Fifth Brother – who is carrying a blade-spinning lightsaber behind him. The scene really works – you can feel the tension rise as you know what’s coming for Obi-Wan.

There has been a lot of chatter about whether The Grand Inquisitor’s new look is detailed or frightening enough, but we really think it is.

Daiyu

There is a new planet that we’re going to get to discover, too.

It’s called Daiyu, and apparently it’s been modelled on Hong Kong. It has massive Blade Runner vibes, with fluorescent signs, flying objects and grey skyscrapers looming in the background. And with Stormtroopers marching in the streets, it looks like we can expect some of the battles between Reva, Obi-Wan and the bounty hunters will be taking place there.

Droids

Of course, there are going to be dozens of new characters in the series, but we get a glance at at least two new droids in the trailer. Legends R2-D2 and C3PO set the bar high, but there’s always excitement amount any new robots joining the Star Wars universe - particularly if they’re friendly, which one of the droids looks to be.

In one clip Obi-Wan wields a gun with a dead droid and Stormtrooper in the background. Is this a friend who has sadly died, or a evil droid sent to track him down? We hope, for Obi-Wan’s sake, it’s the former.
