Obi Wan Kenobi on Disney+: Will there be a second series?

Star Wars fans never seem to be satisfied. Having already waited 17 years for him to return, the fandom are now dying to see even more of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi following the end of his Disney+ mini-series. One social media user wrote: “We need a season 2 to happen. There is still too much of Obi Wan’s journey to explore,” but is that something that could materialize? Or are producers reluctant to 'force' a sequel?

One person who definitely seems to be up for it is McGregor himself. The Scottish actor, 51, has been outspoken about his love for the character. He was particularly excited to reunite with Hayden Christensen, who plays everyone’s favourite baddie: Darth Vader AKA Anakin Skywalker AKA Luke and Leia’s father. Hayden previously revealed what it was like to return to the role, which you can read about here.

Season two of Obi-Wan Kenobi is not a total impossibility either. There is still a significant amount of time to pass that will see McGregor morph into the original Obi-Wan actor, Alec Guinness. Star Wars is not shy of multiple seasons of its television series with the likes of The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars being very successful.

Fans of Obi-Wan Kenobi shouldn’t get too excited just yet though as executive producer, Joby Harold, has said there are “no plans” for a follow-up at the moment.

"I'm being asked about it constantly," Harold said on the Deadline Podcast. "I've just been thinking about this for so long as a close-ended story that my mind is so focused on this as a sort of limited [series], that I haven't thought beyond it.

"But he's a great character. They're all amazing characters," he added. Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi has been very successful. The mini-series, which also stars Rupert Friend, Moses Ingram and Indira Varma, had the highest ever Disney+ premiere to date. Reviews for the series have been positive with McGregor’s performance praised universally.

Whilst no official confirmation has been made about the future of Obi-Wan Kenobi, it would certainly be a surprise for Star Wars fans if the character didn’t pop up somewhere else in future. The next Star Wars series that viewers can look forward to is the third season of The Mandalorian next year. Disney, who have grand plans for the franchise, have multiple projects in the pipeline about the galaxy far, far away.
