It was full speed ahead for Perth Sea Cadets when they set out on the water last weekend to work towards their British Rowing Association Competent Crew Award.
After successfully reopening its doors after an 18-month COVID shutdown, the Sea Cadets and instructors of Training Ship (TS) Fairmaid based at Shore Road, Perth have been working hard to achieve qualifications to help them advance in the Sea Cadet Corps.
Utilising the Dundee Boating Station three cadets have qualified in basic level seamanship since the Fair City unit returned.
Eight cadets have qualified to intermediate level in first aid and one cadet has qualified in basic level catering.
Additionally, during a regular evening Parade Night and following uniform inspection and final drill assessment, five new entry cadets were promoted to cadet during a ceremony witnessed by the TS Fairmaid Ship’s Company.
The Perth unit recently welcomed the Lord Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross Stephen Leckie along with the northern area officer for the corps, Commander Farmer RN.
During their visit they joined the cadets in a group activity about radio communications and as well as meeting and chatting with the volunteers.
The Lord Lieutenant presented power boating awards to a number of cadets as well as some promotions and service awards to volunteers.
In the next few months TS Fairmaid has plans to complete their cadets’ introduction to rowing and undertake a sailing taster session, also at Dundee.
The cadets from Perth will also be in attendance for Perth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations as well as the City of Perth Salute later in the year.
The Perth unit is also currently taking names for its next new entry start date on May 2 for all age groups.
The team meets on Monday and Thursday evenings with weekend opportunities across Tayside and further afield.
These include all forms of boating, from rowing to power boats and sailing, as well as opportunities to take part in subjects as diverse as mountain biking, catering and cyber studies.
The unit is also seeking volunteers for its Unit Management Team.
