A patient in the National Spinal Injuries Unit who tested positive for covid-19 is finally going home to his family
Andrew Rodger, who celebrated his 90 birthday in the unit, was admitted in January following a spinal cord injury after a fall.
While in the unit he tested positive and was unwell with coronavirus for over seven weeks. Now covid-19 free and having completed his rehabilitation journey for his injury he has now been discharged home to live with his daughter.
Andrew’s daughter Sandra, said: “My dad was 89 years old and living an active life, he was even still driving his car. However, a fall resulted in his admission to the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit.
“He has fought a battle and has survived not only an acute spinal injury but also COVID-19.
“During his time in the spinal unit he turned 90 years old and the staff were wonderful and made it a celebration but the biggest celebration for us is his discharge home to his family. We are extremely proud of him.”
Helena Richmond, Senior Charge Nurse, added: “The team have worked very hard to prepare for a safe discharge for Andy and have listened to what was important to him and his family.
“The team have managed to make it happen and he is going home to live with his daughter.
“As Senior Charge Nurse I am sincerely proud of all the staff who have been involved in this journey, we have a fantastic team and it has been an honour to guide and support them through this challenging time.”
